Learning How to Write Book Reviews Using Writing Rubrics

Some fun student examples..

The students are participating in my EIT (Educator in Training) program - they have become the teacher to learn how writing pieces are scored. The ultimate goal is for kids to have a better understanding of the expectations for the writing assignment. (The EIT part is just for fun! 😀)

 Our next writing piece is a book review. Today, they are using a rubric to score four book review examples. With each score, they are providing their "students" with ways to improve. A fun way to learn about our new writing piece and what is expected.

Here is a sneak peek of the beginning of my inferencing hats for my impact comprehension group. A little bit of fun to keep us excited about comprehension. 

They've Arrived!

I'm very thankful for Sunday delivery from Amazon! My two minute timers have arrived just in "time" for Monday. In my class newsletter, I explained how we will be utilizing another way to build fact fluency besides the xtramath website. Flash cards here we come! Each student went home with a set of flash cards in a plastic bag for home use. Students will be practicing those same facts at school with a partner. (I made two sets so we didn't have to worry about the flash cards getting lost between school and home.) They will time each other for two minutes and keep track of how many facts they could do correctly. The goal is to improve each day. Here we go!

Peer Feedback!

We use peer feedback for ways to improve our writing. It helps the author review his/her work while also getting new ideas for his/her writing. The peer giving feedback also has a chance to review writing techniques that we've been learning. I love this picture of two students working hard at peer feedback. The conversation was awesome!
